Native American Language

Native american languages helped make the English language in a weird way.

The Native American Language is one of the most intresting and creative language in the world. You know were the native americans came from but im sure you dont know some things that are on this. the native americans had over 200 diffrent languages but 20 main and orginal laguages that are apart of our states and citys today.

In reality, there were perhaps a thousand languages spoken in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans - about 250 in the present territory of the United States alone. In addition, these languages showed tremendous variety between one another. (Rehling, John. "Native American Language." Indiana University. Indiana University, n.d. Web. 12 Apr. 2010. http://www.cogsci.indiana.edu/farg/rehling/nativeAm/ling.html.)

The arrival of European culture was not kind to the indigenous cultures of the Americas. The population of the native civilizations of the current territory of the United States fell from about 20 million to the present level of less than 2 million. Beyond the shrinking size of the ethnic populations, the languages have also suffered due to the prevalence of English among those of Native American ancestry. Most Native American languages have ceased to exist, or are spoken only by older speakers, with whom the language will die in the coming decades.(Rehling, John. "Native American Language." Indiana University. Indiana University, n.d. Web. 12 Apr. 2010. http://www.cogsci.indiana.edu/farg/rehling/nativeAm/ling.html.)

The Native American languages have contributed numerous place-names in the Western Hemisphere, especially in the United States, many of whose states have names of Native American origin.("Native American Languages: Influence and Survival." Fact Monster. Information Please, 2010. Web. 12 Apr. 2010. http://www.factmonster.com/ce6/society/A0859892.html.)
